Nutrient Film Technique - NFT

One of the widely used methods to grow plants hydroponically is using the NFT method, i.e. Nutrient Film Technique method.

Nutrient Film Technique is classified as water culture because of the continuous supply of nutrient-rich water to the roots of the plants.

In NFT (NUTRIENT FILM TECHNIQUE), the nutrient solution is pumped into the growing tube. The tube has small holes from which the plants are inserted such that the roots of the plants are in contact with the flowing nutrient solution.

The plants are usually kept in small plastic net pots which keep the roots dangling in the tube and even acts as a support for the plants to grow.

The nutrient solution that is pumped (using a pump) in NFT can be recirculated to the roots again and again until it loses its nutritional content.

One serious concern for this technique is that of power outages, the nutrition for the roots of the plants is provided by the continuous flow of the nutritional solution in the tube, if the flow is disrupted then the roots may immediately dry out, which could cause severe damage to the plants.

Another concern that isn’t that serious is pump failure. We recommend you to use the best quality pumps.

Advantages of NFT :

  • Yields are bigger in quantity.
  • It is one of the most productive systems.
  • Reduces labour time.
